For the Needle-phobes
Think you can’t handle the needles? Think again! Acupuncture needles are very small, flexible and sharp. They go through the skin quickly and most people comment that they don’t feel much more than a slight prick. Acupuncture is NOTHING like getting a shot. And really, could a little tiny needle hurt as much as that pain you are having?? The needles are sterile, made of stainless steel and disposed of after each use.
What to expect on your first visit
Your first visit is your opportunity to get to know your acupuncturist (Amy) and for her to learn about you and your health-related goals. Once you arrive, you will join Amy in a treatment room for your initial consultation. This is your time to tell Amy about your current concerns, your goals for treatment and to ask any questions you might have. She will have questions for you, as well, so think of this as a conversation. This can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. Amy will complete your diagnostic interview by taking your pulses and looking at your tongue. If you typically scrape you tongue, please don’t for at least 24 hours prior to your visit.
Once the initial visit is complete, you will lie down on the massage table and get comfortable. Amy may do some palpation, finding tender spots or areas of tension, and then place the needles. Once the needles are set, the lights are dimmed, the music comes on, and you have peace and quiet to rest and relax. Needles stay in anywhere from 25-45 minutes.
Once the needles are removed, get up slowly and stay relaxed. You will have plenty of time to ask questions and talk with Amy. It is best not to plan anything too strenuous or demanding right after your treatment. Results will last longer if you allow yourself to relax and integrate the treatment.
After your visit
It’s important to stay hydrated. This can help feelings of sluggishness or fatigue that often result when the muscles release waste products into the bloodstream. You may notice results immediately after the treatment and you may not – sometimes it takes the body a few hours to process what’s happened. Changes can continue to occur for as long as 36 hours after treatment.
Acute conditions may be relieved in one or two treatments. Chronic problems can often take longer to treat. Amy may recommend herbal therapy, dietary changes or at-home exercises to improve your results and speed your healing process. She will discuss your prognosis with you and recommend the best course of treatment. |
